Union County specifics
Waxhaw sits in Union County, which runs its own tax office separate from Mecklenburg:
- Business personal property listing. If you run a business in Union County, you list your business equipment and property with Union County Tax Administration every January. New businesses miss it in their first year more than anything else.
- Property tax. Union County and the Town of Waxhaw each set their own rate, and both apply to property inside town limits. Parts of Waxhaw's mailing area sit outside town limits, which changes the bill.
- No local income tax. Like all of North Carolina, Union County and Waxhaw do not tax income.
- No town business license. North Carolina towns stopped charging general privilege license taxes in 2015. Some trades still need a state license.
Right on the state line
Waxhaw is a few minutes from Indian Land and Lancaster County, South Carolina. That means a lot of households here have one spouse working in one state and living in the other, a business registered in NC with customers in SC, or a rental across the line.
